This building was constructed by order of Prince (later King) Faysal bin al-Hussein in 1917, when he was Commander of the Great Arab Revolt’s Northern Arab Armies, as a customs center in Aqaba. The building was supervised by Mohammad A. al-Asad (the grandfather of Mohammad S. al-Asad, the Founding Director of the Center for the Study of the Built Environment). Al-Asad had been appointed head of customs in Aqaba in 1917, and became the city’s administrative governor in 1919. Prince Faysal indicated that the building was to include warehouses to store the goods coming into Aqaba, as well as offices and accommodations for the city’s customs employees. He specified that two warehouses would be constructed, each measuring 20 by 7 cubits (a cubit is about 50 cm), in addition to four stores. King Abdullah I Palace or Ma'an Palace is one of the ancient palaces in Jordan, built in 1322 AH / 1904 AD, located 3 km south of the city of Ma'an. It was previously used as one of the buildings of the Hejaz railway station, until Prince Abdullah made it his headquarters when he came to the city on November 21, 1920, and this building was called the "National Defense Headquarters."
The museum showcases various artifacts, photographs, documents, and personal belongings of King Abdullah II, A restoration process was carried out for the building, which became called the “Palace of the Founding King,” to become a comprehensive national museum that sheds light on an important historical phase that begins with the start of the Great Arab Revolt and ends with the day the Jordanian state was founded.
